The Regeneration of the Common Space in the Garden Communities: Participatory Aspect
Danutė Butkienė (International Business School at Vilnius University, Lithuania)
Abstract
The paper examines the process of the regeneration of the community gardens in Lithuania. It focuses on the process of the transformation of the former “sanitarian zones” into community spaces. There are two domi- nating forms of community participation in the process of developing the community spaces (which could be defined in the terms of a Lefebvrian appropriation). The first one is a development of material resources of community space by arranging sport grounds, playgrounds, and places for resting for community members. The second one is community gatherings and neighbours partiesIt is argued, that collective actions of the residents are a driving force for the further development of the garden communities in Lithuania. The role of mediator in the community (the member of the elderate or active citizens) is of great importance.
